You will need a specific rune (HEL) plus a scroll of town portal and the socketed item to do it so, the gems, jewels and other runes will be destroyed in the process. So be careful, because unsocketing items is quite a tedious process in Diablo 2. If it has too many or too few sockets, it will not work. And also check if the item you wanted to use has the necessary socket spaces for inserting all the runes. You will also need to check that the runes are in the right order, that will then form the Runeword.
